Five Wolverines Compete at NCAA Zone Diving Meet

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team sent five divers to the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships, held Friday through Sunday (March 11-13) at Purdue University's Boilermaker Aquatic Center, but none was able to secure one of the zone's seven NCAA Championship berths.
Freshman Elyse Lee (Albion, Mich./Albion HS) posted U-M's top finish in the one- and three-meter springboard events, while senior Alexis Goolik (Highland, Ind./Highland HS) was the top Michigan finisher in the platform diving. Sophomore Ellen Van Cleve (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) and freshmen Erica LaBont (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) and Katie Skendrovic (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) also competed in all three events for the Wolverines.
Lee, the lone Wolverine to qualify for the finals of the three-meter competition on Friday, earned a total of 416.65 for 17th place. On Saturday, Lee collected one of three U-M top-10 finishes with a ninth-place showing on the one-meter board (528.85). Lee wrapped up her first NCAA Zone Diving meet with an 11th-place finish on the platform (324.65) on Sunday (March 13).
Competing in her final collegiate event Sunday, Goolik recorded an impressive eighth-place finish on the platform with a total of 363.90. Goolik placed 16th on the one-meter (476.60) and 24th on the three-meter (239.20) earlier in the weekend.
Van Cleve also had a strong showing during her second career NCAA Zone Diving meet, finishing 10th on the platform (332.10), 15th on the one-meter (479.55) and 25th on the three-meter (237.60). Van Cleve improved upon each of her three marks achieved at last year's championships.
The Wolverines will send eight swimmers to the 2005 NCAA Championships, to be held March 17-19 in West Lafayette, Ind. The NCAA meet, at Purdue University's Boilermaker Aquatic Center, will run Thursday through Saturday with preliminary heats beginning at 11 a.m. and finals starting at 7 p.m. each day.
