Tarwater, Vanderkaay Qualify for World Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- University of Michigan junior men's swimmers Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./The Webb School) and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) both qualified for the U.S. World Championships team on Saturday (April 3). Tarwater won the 200-meter butterfly in 1:58.71, while Vanderkaay came in second in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:48.27 on the second day of the U.S. World Championships Trials. The World Championships will be held on July 17-31 in Montreal, Canada.
Swimming in lane four, Tarwater sat in fifth overall after the first 50 meters of the race. However, with splits of 30.17 and 30.21 over the next two lengths of the race, Tarwater took the lead with just 50 meters remaining and cruised on to the victory. Fellow Wolverine Zayd Ma (Ann Arbor, Mich./Clonlara HS) also made the finals of the event, touching the wall in 2:01.57 to finish eighth overall.
In the 200-meter freestyle, Vanderkaay got off the blocks quickly with an opening split 25.24. Vanderkaay held on to his position with splits of 27.50, 27.86 and 27.67 to finish second behind U-M volunteer assistant coach Michael Phelps, who qualified for the U.S. team in his second event of the trials with a time of 1:46.44. Phelps also qualified in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:47.79. Club Wolverine member Klete Keller also qualified for the World Championships team in the 200-meter freestyle, finishing third in 1:48.67.
The U.S. national team will be selected based on the results of the World Championships Trials. First priority will be given to the top four finishers in the 100- and 200-meter freestyle events and the top finisher in all other events. Second priority goes to the second fastest swimmer in every event except for the 100 and 200-meter freestyle. Third and fourth priority go to the fifth and sixth fastest athletes, respectively, in the 100 and 200-meter freestyle. A maximum of 26 swimmers will be chosen to be a part of the national team.
The World University Games, held on August 11-21 in Izmir, Turkey, will also be selected based on the results of the World Championships Trials. First priority will be given to the top four finishers in the 100- and 200-meter freestyle events and the top finisher in all other events. Second priority goes to the second fastest swimmer in every event except for the 100 and 200-meter freestyle. As with the U.S. national team, a maximum of 26 swimmers will be chosen.
