COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Former University of Michigan hockey player Mike Knuble (1992-95) was chosen to play for Team USA at the 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation's World Championship, USA Hockey announced today (Wednesday, April 6). Knuble is one of 20 players who are slated to play for the Stars and Stripes at the World Championships, which will be held April 30-May 15 in Innsbruck and Vienna, Austria. Three more players will be added in the coming weeks to complete the 23-man roster.
The Grand Rapids, Mich., native also competed in the 1999 and 2001 World Championships. In 1999, Team USA did not qualify for the playoff round and in 2001 it took fourth place.
Last year, three former Wolverines (Andy Hilbert, Jeff Jillson, Blake Sloan) helped Team USA tie its best finish at the event with a bronze-medal performance. Nine ex-Michigan players have been selected to Team USA's national team a total of 16 times. Knuble will be the first of that group to partake in three World Championships.
At Michigan, Knuble was a four-year letterwinner from 1992-95. While never leading the team in scoring in a season, he stands 18th on U-M's all-time career scoring list with 175 points. Knuble's 103 career goals are tied for seventh best all-time.
Knuble has spent the last eight seasons in the National Hockey League. While playing with Detroit in 1996-97 and 1997-98, the Red Wings were Stanley Cup champions. He then moved onto the New York Rangers for nearly two seasons before being traded to the Boston Bruins late in the 1999-2000 season. Knuble spent the last four seasons with the Bruins before signing a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers in the summer of 2004.
