BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Senior Sierra Hauser-Price (Van Nuys, Calif./Notre Dame) punched her ticket to the finals of the 100- and 200-meter dashes, while junior Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) advanced to the 800-meter final as the University of Michigan women's track and field team competed in day one of the NCAA Mideast Regional Friday (May 27) at the Robert C. Haugh Track Complex.
Hauser-Price qualifed for the 100- and 200-meter dash finals, winning her heat in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.68 and advancing on time in the 100 after clocking 11.72 to finish runner-up in the fourth heat against a slight headwind. Starting the 200-meter event in lane six, Hauser-Price held her advantage around the bend and pulled away down the final stretch, beating the competition to line by 0.28 seconds and boasting the fifth-fastest in the preliminary heats. The performance was also a season-best for the U-M senior, trimming 0.08 seconds from her previous mark.
Erdman had the fastest time of the prelims of the 800-meter run, clocking in at a career-best outdoor time of 2:05.27 to win the first heat. Erdman held the third position coming out of the final bend but used her kick to pass Missouri's Ashley Patten and Illinois' Carlene Robinson in the final 100 meters -- beating the pair to the finish line by 20 meters. The Wolverine junior shaved 0.67 seconds from her previous best outdoor mark, which she recorded en route to a individual crown at the Big Ten Championships (May 13-15).
In the only event final in which U-M competed Friday, senior Ashley Eckel (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) placed 14th in the hammer throw with a toss of 175-4 and, despite improving her standing with each throw, could not qualify for the event final or the NCAA Championships.
With only 13 entrants in the 1,500-meter run, no preliminaries were held on day one of the NCAA Mideast Regional. Freshman Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey), fifth-year senior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell) and senior/junior Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele) will all compete in the final Saturday.
Due to lightning, the 5,000-meter run -- which includes Michigan junior/sophomore Rebecca Walter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves) in its field -- was postponed until Saturday, when it will kick off the final day of action at 11 a.m. U-M will also have athletes competing in Saturday finals in the discus, high jump and 3,000-meter steeplechase.
