SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team earned an eighth-place team finish today (Sunday, May 29) at the 2005 NCAA Championships on Lake Natoma. Michigan's first varsity eight took third in its petite final (ninth place overall), the second varsity eight was sixth in its grand final and the first varsity four won its petite final (seventh overall).
No. 1 California won both the first varsity eight and team championships. No. 7 Virginia was the runner-up after winning national boat titles in the second varsity eight and and first varsity four.
Brown pulled out to an early lead in the initial 500 meters of the first varsity eight petite final. Michigan was in third, three-quarters of a length behind, with No. 6 Tennessee in second. While Brown and Tennessee maintained first and second place, respectively, No. 8 Stanford walked through U-M to take over fourth at the 1,000-meter mark. Michigan responded in the next leg of the race to trim Stanford's lead to just a seat. Brown went on to take the race in 6:24.65. Tennessee was second (6:26.26) and the Wolverines had a strong sprint to overtake Stanford and finish third in 6:29.67.
The second varsity eight grand final was Virginia's from start to finish. Virginia led second-place California by four seats after just 500 meters. The Wolverines were in last place, a full length off the leader. Virginia and California pulled away from the field, creating a separate race for third. At the midpoint of the race U-M was down to fifth-place Michigan State by open water and could not manage to recover enough to make up its deficit. Virginia captured first in 6:34.19, followed by California in second (6:26.48). The Maize and Blue was sixth in 6:47.39.
In the first varsity four petite final, Michigan was a bit slow off the starting line as it was down three-quarters of a length to leading Yale and half a length behind second-place Michigan State after 500 meters. U-M hit its stride in the second 500 meters, overtaking both MSU and Yale to hold a seat lead at 1,000 meters. The Wolverines held a five-seat lead on MSU and a full-length advantage on Yale. Both Michigan State and Yale closed on U-M in the sprint, but Michigan held on for the victory in 7:25.40, just two seats ahead of MSU (7:26.20). Yale took third in 7:28.30.

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Mark Rothstein
On his thoughts about U-M's performance today ... "Certainly I'm not pleased with where we finished this year. I thought that we had the potential to do better. I thought that we had some good performances today. We just need to regroup as a coaching staff and as a team and figure out how we're going to come back and perform better next year."
On the first varsity four's petite final victory ... "I was definitely happy to see our four win the petite final. I thought our crews raced well. I thought our second varsity eight did a great job. Probably the highlight of the regatta was the second varsity eight repechage, getting into the final by nosing Yale out. For that crew to make the final given where they came from at the beginning of the season is really a testament to (associate head coach) Emily Ford's coaching and her crew. Overall though, I'm not very happy with our result."
