VERONA, Wis. -- Using two-under 70s from junior Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist) and freshman Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) and an even-par 72 from fifth-year senior Rob Tighe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS), the University of Michigan men's golf team tallied its second-best team total of the season with a two-under 286 in the second round today (Saturday, May 7) at the Big Ten Championships at University Ridge. With the team score, the Wolverines moved from 10th to a tie for sixth place after 36-holes with a 584 total.
Vozza sits as the highest individual for the Wolverines as he is in a tie for 12th with a 144 (74-70) two-day total. With the second round beginning off of No. 10, he started off the back nine strong, recording three birdies in his first seven holes to begin at three under par. He hit a rough patch before making the turn, however, carding back-to-back bogeys for a one-under mark to begin the front nine. A bogey on No. 5 reset his score even, but he finished the round strong, putting up back-to-back birdies on No. 7 and No. 8 to finish the day with a two-under 70.
Tighe continued his strong play with an even-par 72 in round two and sits in a tie for 15th with a 145 (73-72) two-day total. The fifth-year senior carded a better-than-perfect back nine, putting in three birdies among his six pars for a three-under performance before making the turn. He stumbled on the front nine, however, recording two bogeys in the first seven holes before a double bogey on No. 8 put him over par for the first time throughout the day. Tighe was able to finish strong with a birdie on No. 9, putting him at even after day two.
Schaetzel's two-under 70 matched a career low as he sits in a tie for 22nd with a 146 (76-70) 36-hole total. He started his day with a solid back nine, putting up four pars before recording three consecutive birdies for a three-under mark heading into the turn. He made it four-under with another birdie on No. 2, but a bogey on No. 4 erased the advantage. Schaetzel birdied No. 6 to put him back at four under, but bogeyed two of his final three holes to leave him two under on the day.
Freshman Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) currently holds the 46th spot at 150, after recording his second-straight three-over 75 in the second round. He struggled on the back nine to open the day, falling into a three-over hole after carding a bogey and double bogey for his first two marks. He birdied No. 15 between a sandwich of two bogeys to make the turn with a four-over mark. The freshman steadied out for the front nine, carding eight consecutive pars before finishing with a birdie on the final hole for a three-over 75 on the day.
Sophomore Kevin Dore (Dundas, Ontario/St. Mary's) rebounded from his nine-over performance in the first round with a two-over 74 for day two. Dore is currently in a tie for 52nd with a 155 total after see-sawing through birdies and bogeys throughout the day. The sophomore recorded four birdies for round two, but his six bogeys left him with a two-over mark for day two.
Indiana (283-275/558) and Michigan State (282-276/558) are currently in a dead-lock at the top of the team leaderboard with marks of 18-under after 36 holes. Minnesota (285-283/568) sits just 10 strokes behind in third place with an eight-under, 36-hole total. The Hoosier's Jeff Overton has continued his dominance, sitting atop the individual leaderboard with a 130 total after carding his second-consecutive seven-under 65.
The Maize and Blue have 18-holes remaining in the 54-hole championship and will play the third round, Sunday (May 8) with tee times starting at 8:45 a.m. CST off the No. 10 tee. The Wolverines will be paired with Iowa and Wisconsin for the third day of play.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Coach Andrew Sapp
On the Wolverines' first round of the Big Ten Tournament ... "We hit a little bit of a wall towards the end of our round today. Christian (Vozza) played well his last three holes, birding two of his last three to finish strong, Rob (Tighe), unfortunately, bogeyed No. 8 and Tim (Schaetzel) bogeyed his last hole, so we could have been even lower. It was good to see that throughout the entire round we had five guys fighting out there, which something we haven't had much of this year. It's that consistency level that we have always talked about. We finally got it today. Hopefully we can take this momentum and play well tomorrow because in all honesty, we may be tied for sixth but we are only two shots out of 10th. We need to play well tomorrow and back this round up with another good round."
