ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Amy Schmucker (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS), who just completed her junior season with the University of Michigan women's golf team, and Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS), who finished her record-breaking sophomore year, will compete in the 2005 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links, Monday through Saturday, July 11-16, at Swope Memorial Golf Club in Kansas City, Mo.
Schmucker played her way into the 144-player field after using an even-par 72 to take home medalist honors in her sectional qualifier Tuesday (June 14) at Rush Creek Golf Club in Maple Grove, Minn. Broderick was exempt from qualifying after advancing to the match-play field at the 2004 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.
This will mark the second straight U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Broderick will compete in. At last year's championships, she played her way into the match-play field of 64 after rounds of 73 and 76 for a 149 total, tying her for 54th. She advanced to the second round of match play before being eliminated by Nara Shin, 2 and 1. Schmucker will be competing in her first WAPL.
The U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship began in 1977 at Yahara Hills Golf Club in Madison, Wis. The WAPL is open to female golfers who have been bona fide public course players since Jan. 1 of the current championship year. It is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA.
The WAPL will consist of two rounds of stroke play to determine a field of 64, who will then compete in a match-play format.
NOTE: Schmucker (73-75/148) tied for 29th and Broderick (76-78/154) tied for 70th in stroke-play qualifying. Schmucker qualified for match play and lost in the opening round to Heather Rose, 1 up.
