ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan fifth-year senior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell) was voted ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American of the Year for women's track and field for the second straight year, announced Thursday (June 23) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Gallo earned Academic All-America All-District IV first team honors to advance to the national ballot and was selected first among 80 finalists on the national ballot.
CoSIDA's Academic All-America committee selects the honorees for its 2005 national teams, which are comprised of student-athletes who were voted to the ESPN The Magazine academic all-district first team of their respective districts.
Gallo posted a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average in the business school and a 4.0 in the Master of Accounting program this year. She anchored the Wolverines' distance medley relay team to a first-place finish at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships and earned the sixth All-America honor of her career with a seventh-place finish in the 1,500-meter run at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, tying her for the most All-America honors in program history.
Gallo competed in the mile at the indoor championships, earning All-America honors with a third-place showing. She won three individual events -- the mile and 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs -- at the Big Ten Indoor Championships and earned the Big Ten Indoor Athlete of the Year, Athlete of the Championship and USTCA Regional Athlete of the Year awards. Gallo also received the Big Ten Medal of Honor and the Bob Ufer Quarterback Club Senior Athlete Achievement Award as a senior. Gallo has earned U-M Athletic Academic Achievement honors on five occasions and received Academic All-Big Ten honors four times.
Gallo competes in the 1,500-meter run at the 2005 USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships this week (June 23-26) at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
