ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's cross country head coach and associate women's track and field coach Mike McGuire was named National Assistant Coach of the Year for distance by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association today (Friday, July 22).
The honor is McGuire's third coaching accolade of the year, following Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year and Big Ten Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year honors.
In 2005, McGuire helped Michigan win its third indoor conference title in the last four years after leading U-M to its third straight Big Ten cross country championship and the sixth title in program history. McGuire coached the Wolverines' distance medley relay team to a national title in 2005, giving McGuire three DMR national titles during his coaching tenure. His distance athletes earned seven All-America honors in track and field, while one of his cross country athletes picked up All-America accolades in the fall. McGuire also helped mentor Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell) to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American of the Year honors the past two years.
McGuire earned Big Ten Coach of the Year accolades three straight seasons from 1992-94 and from 2002-04, while also receiving NCAA Regional Cross Country Coach of the Year honors from 1992-94.
