AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands -- A pair of University of Michigan rowers received medals yesterday (Sunday, July 24) at the 2005 World Rowing Under-23 Championships. Stesha Carl (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS), a soon-to-be senior, took home a gold medal for Team USA in the women's four final. In addition, alumna Brett Sickler (Los Gatos, Calif./Los Gatos HS) garnered a bronze medal for her efforts in the U.S. women's double sculls.
Carl's victory came as a result of a fantastic come-from-behind effort. Her U.S. crew sat in sixth place following the opening quarter of the race. A continuous improvement through the rest of the race pulled the Americans into second place at 1,000 meters and eventually first place in the final 500 meters. The final time for the crew was 7:24.29. Her teammates included Erin Cafaro, Megan Kalmoe and Catherin Starr.
Sickler and her partner, Deborah Dryer, took third behind wire-to-wire winner Italy and second-place Australia. The U.S. boat was in second place through the first half of the sprint but was eventually overtaken by the Australians. Sickler and Dryer finished in 7:40.16, 6.19 seconds behind the Italians and 3.57 seconds behind Australia.
