WINDSOR, Ontario -- Sophomore Alyson Kohlmeier (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Patrick's), a member of the University of Michigan women's track and field team, captured the 3,000-meter crown to lead a trio of Wolverine representatives at the Pan American Junior Championships, held July 29-31, at the University of Windsor Stadium.
Kohlmeier dominated the eight-person field, winning with a time of 9:25.09, nearly 11 seconds ahead of runner-up Ines Melchor of Peru. Sophomore Lisa Canty (Highland, Mich./Milford) claimed seventh place in the same event after clocking 10:28.71.
Sophomore Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) rounded out the U-M competitors in the 1,500-meter run, placing fifth in 4:38.40. It was Edwards' second appearance at the Pan American junior meet; in 2003, she claimed fifth place in the 800-meter run.
Held every two years since 1980, the four-day event featured over 600 athletes aged 19-and-under, representing 45 different countries in the Pan-American region. Kohlmeier claimed one of two gold medals for the Canadian team -- sophomore Mike Woods (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest HS) claimed the other -- which finished second in the final medal standings with 18. The United States boasted the most total medals (57) with 22 gold, 24 silver and 11 bronze.
