IOWA CITY, Iowa -- As seniors Brandon Duff (Goodrich, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) and Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist HS) along with freshman Bill Rankin (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) tallied top 10 individual finishes, the University of Michigan men's golf team closed out the 2005 Hawkeye Intercollegiate today (Sept. 10) with a third-place team finish.
The Wolverines, who played at Iowa's Finkbine Golf Course, tallied team round totals of one-over 289, even-par 288 and were in second place after the first day of play. A final round four-over 292 slipped the Wolverines a spot as they finished third with an 869 54-hole team total -- the best team total in four years.
After playing in only one event last season, Duff started out his senior campaign with a starting spot and took full advantage of it as he led the way with a tie for seventh. He closed out the tournament with a one-under 215 54-hole total, which was a career-best by five strokes. He opened the tournament firing a career-best two-under 70, only to slip slightly in the second round with a two-over 74. He rallied in the final round posting a one-under 71 to earn his first career top 10 finish.
Vozza continued right where he left off from last season, as he set the pace for the Maize and Blue on the first day with back-to-back two-under 70s. Unfortunately, he could not convert his opportunities in the final round as he closed with a 77 giving him a one-over 217 tournament total and a tie for 10th.
For the second straight year, the Wolverines had a freshman finish in the top 10 in their first collegiate event as Rankin tied for 10th with a 217 total. After opening with a two-over 74, he had descending rounds of even-par 72 in the second round and a career-best one-under 71 in the final round.
Other Wolverine finishes at the Hawkeye included: junior Will Kendall (Gerrards Cross, England/Oundle School), tied for 23rd with a 223 total (78-72-73) and sophomore Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy), was 34th with a 228 total (75-74-79).
Western Illinois led from start to finish as they tallied a 19-under 845 total (275-283-287). Host Iowa was the runner-up with a 864 total (293-287-284). Individually, Western Illinois' Tim Streng took home medalist honors with an 11-under 205 total (65-69-71) and Iowa's Todd Larson, who played as an individual, was the runner-up with an eight-under 208 (72-67-69).
The Wolverines next hit the links hosting the 2005 Wolverine Intercollegiate, Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 24-25). The 54-hole tournament will be played at the U-M Golf Course with 36 holes on Saturday and a final 18 on Sunday. Both days of competition will begin with 8:30 shotgun starts.
