ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team defeated Western Michigan 5-3 on Friday (Sept. 16) at the U-M Soccer Field. Senior Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) netted her first career hat trick, scoring just 2:15 in and adding a pair of second-half goals, including the game-winner, to lead the Wolverine offense. Junior Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) added a first-half goal and freshman Danelle Underwood (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) tallied her second career goal. Junior Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) remained undefeated (3-0-1), picking up her third win of the season.
Heaton started the scoring early with a goal at 2:15. Heaton took possession of free ball behind the Broncos' defense and scooted a shot low into the net.
Western Michigan tied the game at 14:27 on a goal that resulted from a free kick. Midfielder Katie Ruzinsky flicked a shot directly off the free kick past Tuura to tie the game at 1-1. Coffman put Michigan up 2-1 less than two minutes later at 16:12 as she dribbled past a Broncos defender and fired a shot past Western Michigan goalkeeper Kate Perz.
Western Michigan tied the game with less than five minutes left in the first half. Forward Thalia Playford gathered a ball off a Michigan turnover and slid a shot past Tuura. Michigan found itself in a 2-2 tie as the first half ended despite carrying play for the majority of the half.
The Wolverines came out strong in the second half, scoring just over five minutes into the second half at 50:06. In a shot that appeared to have been saved by Broncos goalie Perz, Underwood was rewarded with the goal. Sophomore Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) ripped a shot off a free kick by senior Stephanie Boyles (Arvada, Colo./Pomona), but the shot bounced off Perz and Underwood followed up with the goal that barely crossed the line.
Heaton extended the Wolverine lead to two with her goal at 74:10. Sophomore Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) crossed a ball from the left side and Heaton volleyed a shot to the low left corner of the net to move the score to 4-2. Heaton completed the hat trick four minutes later at 78:45 off a through ball from sophomore Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough School). Heaton passed the ball to Banco and raced through the Broncos defense as Banco completed the give-and-go to Heaton, who placed a shot into the low left corner of the net.
Western Michigan tallied its third goal of the game with less than two minutes to play as forward Mandi Marsh caught up to a long ball and put her shot past Tuura to make the score 5-3.
The Wolverines head to South Bend, Ind., on Sunday (Sept. 18) to face No. 5-ranked Notre Dame at Alumni Field. Game time is 1 p.m. EST/CDT.
