Michigan Blanked at Maryland for Third Straight Defeat

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team suffered its third consecutive loss of the 2005 campaign, falling to Maryland 4-0 on Friday (Sept. 2) at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
The Terrapins struck three times in the first half, taking advantage of penalty corner situations on each occasion, to build a three-goal cushion at the halftime break. Emily Beach opened the scoring at the 13:21 mark to give Maryland the only lead it would need, and Paula Infante tallied a pair of goals within a seven-minute window late in the frame. All three goals came directly off the penalty corner with Janneke van Leeuwen earning three assists and Tiffany Marsh netting a pair of helpers for the stop. Junior goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) got a piece of Infante's second goal, but the ball deflected off her padding into the U-M cage.
Maryland's Emily Trycinski added an insurance goal for the Terps at the 53:20 in the second half, using a backhanded slap shot to blast the ball past a sprawling Riley. Marsh earned her third assist of the game on the play.
The Terrapins held a commanding advantage in shots (24-5) and penalty corners (12-3), but U-M narrowed the gap in a more even-matched second half. Riley continued her solid play in the Wolverine cage with nine saves -- marking her third game with at least seven stops -- while Maryland's Kathryn Masson earned three saves and the shutout victory.
The Wolverines will wrap up their East Coast road trip on Sunday (Sept. 4) when they travel to Philadelphia to face off against Temple in a noon non-conference contest.
