ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After a 45-minute delay due to fog and gray skies threatening rain throughout the final round, the University of Michigan men's golf team and senior Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist HS) would not be denied as the Maize and Blue maintained its first-day lead and went on to win both the team and individual titles at the 2005 Wolverine Intercollegiate today (Sunday, Sept. 25), in school-record fashion.

Medalist Vozza was the only competitor to string together three rounds in the 60s.
After recording the school's first-ever team round below 280 with a seven-under 277 in the first round, the Wolverines bettered it with a school record nine-under 275 in the second, building a 12-stroke lead in the process. With all the delays and impending stormy weather, the Wolverines closed out their first win in over four years posting a three-over 287 to finish with a U-M record 839 54-hole total.
Vozza captured his first collegiate medalist honor as he fired three straight rounds under par to give him a U-M school record and career-best eight-under 205 54-hole tournament total. After carding a four-under 67 in the first round, he followed with back-to-back two-under 69s to secure a one-shot victory over Xavier's Jason Kokrak (67-72-67) and Iowa's Cole Peevler (65-72-69), who tallied 206 54-hole totals.
Sophomore Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) followed Vozza's pace, finishing with a career-best six-under 207 after he also had three straight rounds under par. After opening with a career-best four-under 67, he had back-to-back one-under 70s to earn a career-best tie for fourth place.
Fellow-sophomore Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS) also had a career weekend. He got the Wolverines going after posting back-to-back career-best four-under 67s to sit atop the leaderboard after the first 36 holes. He slipped in the second round posting a three-over 74, but still tallied a career-best five-under 208 54-hole tournament total.
Senior Brandon Duff (Goodrich, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) tied for 45th with a 220 total. He opened with a 76, but rallied with a career-best two-under 69 before closing out with a 75. Freshman Bill Rankin (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) tied for 63rd with a 224 total after rounds of 78, an even-par 72 and a two-over 74.
Playing as individuals, junior Matt McLaughlin (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS), junior Kevin Dore (Dundas, Ontario/St. Mary's) and junior Will Kendall (Gerrards Cross, England/Oundle School) each garnered top-20 finishes. McLaughlin tied for 13th with a career-best 212 total. He recorded descending rounds of one-over 72, even-par 71 and a career-best two-under 69.
Dore and Kendall both tied for 20th with career-best 214 totals. Dore, who tied his career-best 54-hole total, opened with a one-over 72, but rallied with a two-under 69 in the second round. He closed with a two-over 73. Kendall opened with a one-over 72 and had a two-over 73 in the second round. He rallied in the final round posting a career-best two-under 69.
Other individual finishes include: fifth-senior Mark McIntosh (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord HS) tied for 22nd with a career-best 215 (70-71-74); freshman Nick Pumford (St. Charles, Mich./St. Charles HS) tied for 63rd with a 224 (74-73-77); fifth-year senior Jimmy Wisinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) tied for 69th with a 227 (73-80-74) and junior Brian Schielke (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) was 81st with a 233 (79-78-76).
The Wolverines will hit the road for their third fall tournament of the season when they head to Cordova, Tenn., Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 3-4) for the 2005 Memphis Intercollegiate at the Colonial Country Club. The two-day tournament will be 54 holes, with 36 on Monday and a final 18 on Tuesday.
