BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer dropped a 2-1 decision to Indiana Friday afternoon (Sept. 30) at Armstrong Stadium. The Wolverines outshot the Hoosiers 20-14 and held the advantage in corner kicks 9-4. Sophomore Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) tallied her first goal of the season, and junior Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) added her second assist of the season.
The Hoosiers started the scoring when senior Kristen Zmijewski netted an unassisted goal at 27:53. Zmijewski carried the ball from midfield and from nearly 30 yards out took an uncontested shot that sailed past goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) to make the score 1-0.
The Wolverines tied the game at 35:46 off a set piece from Coffman. Coffman served a free kick into the box to Artsis, who buried the ball into the net to even the score at 1-1. The Hoosiers took the lead for good at 67:07. Megan Pipkens crossed the ball into the box to Kristin Radcliffe, who settled the bouncing ball and netted a shot past Tuura. The Wolverines fought hard until the last whistle but could not finish and found themselves on the wrong side of a 2-1 defeat.
The Maize and Blue travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to face Purdue at 1 p.m. EST/CDT Sunday (Oct. 2) at the Varsity Soccer Complex.

Senior Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS) played in her 81st game and made the 61st start of her career. She is the Wolverines' active leader in both categories.
Junior Judy Coffman tallied her second assist of the season on Jamie Artsis' goal at 35:46. Coffman has six points (2 g, 2 a) this season.
Coffman led the Wolverines in shots for the third straight game. Her five shots tied her for the team lead in the game with Heaton and Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS).
Sophomore Jamie Artsis notched her first goal of the season. The only other goals of her career came on a hat trick scored at Iowa last season on Sept. 26, 2004. She has one goal and two assists in 10 games this season.
This marks the first time since a 3-1 loss in Michigan's inaugural season in 1994 that the Wolverines have dropped a game to Indiana. The Wolverines shut the Hoosiers out every season from 1995 to 2004, while holding a record of 9-0-1 during that span.
Q U O T E SMichigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On sophomore forward Jamie Artsis ... "It was good for her to get that monkey off her back and put a ball in. It's definitely a confidence boost."
On how to improve the rest of the season ... "It is not only putting the ball into the net. It's defending better. We're averaging almost two goals per game. It's just being able to move on. We certainly had our chances. We outshot them and had some great opportunities against the run of play. It wasn't a really pretty game, but [Indiana] just stuck them in. We just need to bounce back and get ready for Sunday. Every Big Ten game is just really intense and everybody is good. We have to go in and play tough. If we get one (goal) great and we have to be able to hold onto that."
On expectations for the rest of the Big Ten play ... "I expect every game to be a battle. We had a great game against Ohio State. We didn't play poorly today. We had a lot of opportunities. It was a very different game. Every team plays a different style, and it was a whole different kind of game today. We just have to be ready for every kind of game."
