Wolverines Drop Big Ten Game to No. 8-Ranked Indiana

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team could not finish its chances against No. 8 Indiana on Friday (Sept. 30), falling 3-1 to the Hoosiers at Ocker Field.
Freshman Erin Dallas (Marlow, N.H./Keene HS) scored the lone goal for the Wolverines, redirecting a shot from freshman Stephanie Hoyer (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) in the final minute of play, but the tally came a lttle too late as the Wolverines suffered their second conference loss of the season.
The Hoosiers came out firing, stealing the early momentum with a series of penalty corners in the opening minutes. Michigan limited the number of quality scoring chances until midway through the frame when IU's Nikki Orciuch found herself alone deep in the striking circle and slammed a shot past Wolverine goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) to the lower right corner.
The Wolverines stepped up in the latter part of the opening half as momentum shifted to the other end of the pitch. They could not connect on several deep scoring opportunities as Dallas carried the ball from midfield into the circle and drew a corner. Moment later, the U-M freshman could not corral a bouncing ball through the Hoosier circle after a long lead-pass from freshman Sarah Wilhite (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey HS).
IU came out the halftime intermission rolling, scoring early to build a two-goal cushion on the Wolverines. Lesley Wiler scored the eventual game-winner at the 42:31 mark, sending a hard, direct shot off a Hoosier penalty corner to the lower right corner. Indiana carried much of the play throughout the second frame, applying sustained pressure in the Wolverines' end of the field. Lydia Schrott added an insurance goal at 59:57, accepting a pass from Layla Bashore at the right post and hammering it to the far lower corner.
Michigan held the 13-10 advantage in shots, but the Hoosiers out-cornered U-M 9-5, which proved a big factor in the game. Riley earned three saves in the U-M cage, while Haley Exner tallied five stops for the win.
Michigan will wrap up the two-game homestand against No. 7 Penn State on Sunday (Oct. 2). The conference match is slated for a 1 p.m. start at Ocker Field.
