EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team's first game in the MSU/Radisson Classic was a 1-0 win over Denver on Sunday (Sept. 4) on Old College Field. It marks the second year in a row that the Wolverines have opened the season with a 2-0 record.
The Wolverines were successful because of the play and leadership of seniors Peter Dzubay (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) and captain Kevin Hall (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central). The lone goal for U-M was scored by Hall, assisted by fellow senior captain Adam Bruh (Roslyn Heights, N.Y./Wheatley) with a little less than 15:00 left in the game. The goal happened after Bruh slipped a pass to Hall. As Hall was making a run on the ball, goalie Matt Bredehoft made an attempt to pick up the ball but fumbled it, leaving an easy shot for Hall to take. To go along with his goal, Hall took two shots and both of them were on goal.
The first half of the game was plagued by Denver fouls (15) to Michigan's four fouls, while the second half was full of Denver miscued shots. The Pioneers took 11 shots, seven more than their first-half performance, but only four were on goal. After intermission the Wolverines stepped up their offense with six shots, doubling their shot count from the first half.
The Wolverines defense was anchored by Dzubay, with five saves and his second shutout in two games. In the first half, Dzubay only had to make one save, but after intermission Denver turned up the heat, forcing him to make four saves. At around the 71st minute, Dzubay made one of the biggest saves of the day. An attacker fired a shot at the top corner, the ball was deflected and Dzubay was there to completely stretch out and knock the ball over the bar.
The Wolverines will close out the tournament against Massachusetts on Monday (Sept. 5) at 2:30 p.m. in East Lansing, Mich.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "This was a very entertaining, wide-open, early-season college soccer game between two good teams, and Denver gave us everything we could handle."
On the lessons the team has been learning ... "The main lesson the team's learning is recognizing how to take advantage of what the other team gives you, and that's probably one of the most difficult things for a team that values possession, is to recognize when you have to play a more direct game."
On the team defense ... "This team has a good defensive personality to it, and one of the guys that really stepped up, besides (Peter) Dzubay, was Justin Aramaki. Justin played a really good game at the center-back position; he was thrust into that position but was composed and sure footed and was always there when we needed him. But overall team defense came from the tone that was set by our attacking midfielder Adam Bruh, and Bruh worked harder than I've ever seen him work wearing a Michigan uniform, and here we are in his senior year, so it's great to see that he knows what needs to be done and can continue to outdo past performances."
