ZIONSVILLE, Ind. -- With the tees moved back and difficult pin placements set up for the final round, the University of Michigan men's golf team and the rest of tournament field saw scores elevate today (Sunday, Oct. 8) as the Wolf Run Intercollegiate at Wolf Run Country Club concluded.
Michigan closed out the tournament with an eighth-place finish after a 911 54-hole tournament total. After posting team totals of 300 and 299 during Saturday's first 36 holes, the Maize and Blue closed with a 312 total in Sunday's final round. Overall, team scores went up an average of 12.6 strokes per team round on the final day.
Junior Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) posted his second straight top-10 finish as he tied for seventh with a 219 total. After opening with a 74, he rallied in the second round with a one-under 70 to move into seventh after the first day of play. With course conditions tougher, he closed with a solid 75 after a slow start in the final round to remain in the seventh spot, tying with Kentucky's Brad Doster (73-72-74) and Central Florida's Kyle Davis (76-71-72).
Sophomore Bill Rankin (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) followed with his second straight tournament with a top-20 finish as he was 18th with a 227 total. After getting off to a red-hot start with a one-under 70 in the first round, he ran into a few unfortunate breaks in the second round as he posted a 76. He closed with an 81.

Freshman Billy McKay (Grand Blanc, Mich./David Leadbetter Golf Academy [Bradenton, Fla.]) played as an individual and tied for 20th with a 229 total. After opening with a 77 in the first round he posted back-to-back 76s to close the tournament and finished as the top individual among non-starters.
Kentucky (292-289-305) and Louisville (290-294-302) both closed the 54 holes with 886 totals, forcing a team playoff. The UK Wildcats prevailed on the second hole of the playoff to take home the team hardware, but it was Louisville's Derek Fathauer (66-73-75) who took home medalist honors as he tallied a one-over 214 tournament total. Kentucky's Andy Winings (70-71-75) was the runner-up at 216.
The Wolverines will waste no time getting back onto the road as they travel to Edmond, Okla., Sunday through Tuesday (Oct. 15-17) for the Oak Tree Intercollegiate, hosted by Oklahoma. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Oak Tree Country Club.

Q U O T E S
Michigan coach Andrew Sapp
On the tournament ... "Today the course was played much, much longer. There were several different hole locations with some difficult pin placements that really made play harder. This was already a tough course to begin with. There are several undulating greens that were under slopes and over slopes that really made it hard to get the ball close to the pin. So you saw some big numbers today. After seeing a 66 yesterday morning and a 65 that afternoon, today, with the way the course was playing, the average score had to be above 70.
"We just had guys put up some big numbers this weekend. We just can't do that. We also seemed to string along bad holes in stretches and that hurt us overall. We are just not finishing off rounds. We were right in it the entire final round. We were all so close with our scores we could have moved up, but we just got those big numbers and it took us right out of it.
"It was good to see Tim (Schaetzel) back up his top-10 finish at the Wolverine with another top-10 finish here. This was a tough course with a good field and for him to play well was a good sign. It was also nice to see Kevin (Dore) bounce back with his 74 in the final round. Bill (Rankin) did the opposite from the Wolverine, where he started out slow and got red hot. Here he started off red hot and slowed, but he hung in there especially with how hard the course was playing today."
U-M Junior Tim Schaetzel
On getting his second straight top-10 individual finish ... "Individually, I was pretty happy with the way I played. I feel like I am finally getting to the point where I can go out and play consistent golf and score well on different and difficult courses. I got off to a rough start today with an early double bogey, but I managed to come back and get pars when I need to and that helped me stay in the round. Overall I just played really solid."
On the Wolverines' finish ... "It was disappointing for us to finish eighth. After the first day, everyone was so close to each other that we really wanted to come back today and beat some teams, especially in our district. We wanted to give ourselves a good opportunity to move up and get a solid finish. Unfortunately, that didn't happen."
