CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 52 University of Michigan men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the dual match season Sunday afternoon (Feb. 5), falling by a score of 6-1 to No. 7 Virginia at the Indoor Tennis Stadium at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The Wolverines (4-1) grabbed the early momentum by winning a tight doubles point, but the Cavaliers stormed back to sweep all six singles matches and improve to 7-3 all-time against Michigan.
Virginia's No. 25-ranked pairing of Darrin Cohen and Doug Stewart gave the Cavaliers the early edge in doubles, defeating junior Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) and freshman Scott Bruckmann (Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal School) by an 8-5 score. Junior Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) and freshman Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) drew Michigan even with a huge 8-6 triumph over Nick Meythaler and Rylan Rizza at No. 2.
The Wolverines secured the first team point of the match when junior Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and sophomore Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) earned a tiebreaker victory over Virginia's No. 35-ranked team of Treat Huey and Somdev Devvarman at No. 1. The U-M tandem saved two match points en route to its 9-8(6) thriller. Hung and Maravic improve to 4-1 on the dual match season and 11-4 overall.
Virginia grabbed a 2-1 lead in the match by picking up two quick singles victories, with Jarrett Chirico spoiling Bruckmann's dual match singles debut, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6 and sixth-ranked Huey handing Peretz his first loss of the dual match season, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4. However, Michigan hung tough in the other four singles matches and forced them to three sets.
After a 6-3 loss in the first set at No. 1, Maravic evened the match with a 7-5 triumph in the second set, but Stewart rolled to a 6-1 win in the deciding frame to bring the Cavaliers one match from victory. No. 46 Marko Miklo clinched the team victory for Virginia, rebounding from a first-set loss to defeat Mazlin 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
At No. 3, U-M's No. 62-ranked Heller and Virginia's No. 53 Rizza traded 6-3 wins in the first two sets before Rizza took the deciding set in a tiebreaker, 7-6(4). Facing No. 10-ranked Devvarman at No. 2, Hung won a tight first set, 7-6(3), but Devvarman recovered to take the match, 6-1, 6-2.
The Wolverines will return home to the Varsity Tennis Center to host Louisiana State next Friday (Feb. 10) at 6 p.m. Michigan will then head back out on the road to face Alabama on Sunday (Feb. 12, noon) at the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
