WACO, Texas -- Baylor scored six runs in the first two innings and coasted to a 16-0 win over the Univeristy of Michigan baseball team Saturday evening (March 11) in a second-day action in the Quala-T Imprint Baylor Classic hosted by the Bears.
Four pitchers shared the four-hit shutout for Baylor (12-3), the first shutout against the Wolverines since Minnesota's 1-0 win to open Big Ten Conference play last spring, and the 16 runs were the most allowed since St. John's scored 17 a year ago on the spring trip to Florida in a 17-12 game.
The Wolverines (3-6) had a chance to score in the first inning against Baylor's junior LHP Cory VanAllen as junior SS Leif Mahler (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) beat out a bunt single and moved to second on a wild pitch. He moved to third on a groundout, and sophomore Nate Recknagel's (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) bid for a bloop single was snagged by Baylor 2B Kevin Russo. Van Allen's fastball was clocked at 93 miles per hour during the first inning.
VanAllen (3-1), a third-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers out of high school in 2003, worked the first six innings, allowing four hits, and he had a season-high eight strikeouts. He retired seven in a row after a two-out single by senior 3B A.J. Scheidt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) in the second inning.
The only inning the Wolverines had more than one base runner off VanAllen came in the sixth on a leadoff walk by senior RF Mike Schmidt (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) and a two-out single by Recknagel.
Baylor scored four times in the first inning off Michigan starter Drew Taylor (Toronto, Ontario/Upper Canada College) with six consecutive hits after two outs as Russo started the rally with single up the middle to extend his team season-best hitting streak to six games. He scored from first as LF Seth Fortenberry lined an opposite-field double down the leftfield line for a 1-0 lead.
DH Tim Jackson and 3B Drew Bias had RBI singles and CF Paul Miles, making his first career start, had a run-scoring double for his first career hit in that first inning. Bias had three of Baylor's 19 hits to lead the Bears.
Baylor chased Taylor (0-2) with a couple of second-inning singles, and junior/sophomore RHP Dan Lentz (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) gave up a two-run double to DH Jackson and the score was 6-0 with all six runs scored after two outs. Jackson and SS Beamer Weems paced the Baylor attack with three RBI each.
Lentz worked 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with two K's, and was replaced by freshman LHP Mike Wilson (Pickering, Ont./Pine Ridge Secondary) in the bottom of the fifth inning. Baylor scored three runs on one hit off Wilson with two walks, two HBPs and a two-run double by Weems. The Bears added three runs in the sixth and four more in the eighth for the final margin of victory.
The Wolverines managed just a walk and a hit batter in the final three innings against the Baylor bullpen.
Michigan meets Pacific (11-5) on Sunday (March 12, 11 a.m. CST) in third-day action in the tournament with junior RHP Andrew Hess (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central HS) at 1-0 with a 3.38 ERA listed as the tentative starting pitcher.
