ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team took fourth place at the 2006 Big Ten Conference Championships today (Saturday, April 29) on Lake Phalen. The Wolverine first varsity eight led the way with a runner-up finish in its grand final. The second varsity eight placed third in its grand final event.
With 112 points, the Maize and Blue ended the day behind No. 5 Ohio State (130), which won its second Big Ten title, No. 17 Minnesota (121) and No. 6 Michigan State (113). No. 18 Wisconsin (88) was fifth, Iowa (45) finished sixth, and Indiana (34) was seventh. As a result of rain and a strong crosswind throughout the day the races were all compressed into the morning. The order of the races were also rearranged so that the varsity events occurred first during the heats and finals.
The first varsity eight grand final was very competitive from start to finish. The Wolverines held a slight lead on the field (Ohio State, Minnesota, Michigan State) through the start, but all crews were within four seats of one another. At 500 meters Michigan was ahead of Minnesota, which was followed by OSU and MSU. Just prior to the 1,000-meter mark the Maize and Blue was just a seat up on second-place Ohio State. By 1,250 meters, though, the Buckeyes had taken over first place. In the final stretch it was OSU, U-M, Minnesota and Michigan State. U-M and Minnesota attacked late, but the Buckeyes held them off to capture first place in 6:46.2. Michigan was five seats behind in second place (6:47.8). The Gophers were third (6:48.8) and the Spartans were fourth (6:52.4).
The second varsity eight grand final was controlled by Ohio State and Michigan State from start to finish. The Buckeyes had the lead at 300 meters, just in front of MSU. The Wolverines made a move at 500 meters to narrow the gap. At the midpoint of the race the Spartans and Buckeyes were neck and neck for first place, and the Wolverines were eight seats behind the co-leaders. Minnesota was a length behind U-M in fourth. The Buckeyes kept moving out on the field in the final stages of the race. Michigan pushed MSU in the final 500 meters, but the Spartans replied and held on for second. OSU finished in 6:55.0, ahead of MSU (6:56.0), U-M (7:00.7) and Minnesota (7:05.5).
The first varsity four grand final went to the Golden Gophers, who led the whole way. Minnesota was up on Michigan State and Wisconsin in the first quarter of the race with Michigan in fourth. By 1,000 meters the Gophers had an open-water lead on Michigan State. MSU was nearly a length ahead of Wisconsin, which was six seats up on Michigan. The spacing between the crews spread out over the next 500 meters only to tighten up in the final sprint. Minnesota ended up winning in 7:39.5, though just 1.1 seconds in front of second-place Michigan State. The Maize and Blue closed quickly on Wisconsin but came up half a second short of third place.
Michigan's second varsity four dominated its petite final in a time of 8:20.9. The Hoosiers were very far behind in second place in 8:58.7, and Iowa was third in 9:14.6.
The U-M first novice eight won the petite final in 7:22.6. Iowa was second in 7:34.3 and OSU was third in 7:55.2. The second novice eight crossed the finish line in fourth place in its grand final. The Wolverines were just over a length behind third-place Michigan State. Minnesota and Wisconsin were first and second, respectively.
Michigan had an outstanding start to the morning with the first varsity eight and second varsity eight winning their heats. Seeded No. 5, the second varsity eight upset No. 1 seed Ohio State and No. 4 Wisconsin to reach the grand final. The first varsity four and second novice eight reached their respective grand finals by taking second place in their heats. U-M's second varsity four and first novice eight were relegated to the petite final after taking third place in each of their heats.
Michigan will have the next weekend off before it attempts to gain an NCAA Rowing Championships bid for itself when it competes at the Central Region Championships on May 13-14 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
