DURHAM, N.C. -- Sophomore/freshman Dan Harmsen (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) registered the first NCAA regional-qualifying standard of his career to headline the University of Michigan men's track and field team's performances on the first day of the comepetition at the Duke Invitational on Friday (April 7) at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Harmsen, who is the third Wolverine competitor to earn a qualifying bid to the NCAA Mideast Regional this season, clocked a personal-best 52.26 to claim runner-up honors in the second heat of the 400-meter hurdles and eighth place overall among the 29-man field. The Wolverine freshman has improved his best time in the event in back-to-back appearances, shaving 0.51 seconds from his performance at last weekend's at the Yellow Jacket Invitational (April 1).
Junior/sophomore Chris Stowe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) just missed the NCAA regional standard in the same event, taking the 13th overall spot with a time of 53.29. Stowe, who competed in the 400-meter hurdles at last season's NCAA Mideast Regional, fell 0.78 seconds shy of the qualifying time.
Freshman Adam Harris (Wheaton, Ill./North HS), senior/junior Todd Iacovelli (Kailua, Hawaii/Punahou HS) and junior Chris McHugh (Bonita Springs, Fla./Bishop Hendricken HS) also boasted top-10 showings in their respective events. Harris registered a time of 10.91 in his collegiate 100-meter debut, claiming fourth place in the developmental section, while Iacovelli, competing in the developmental section of the 1,500-meter run, claimed 10th place with a time of 3:59.98. McHugh finished sixth in the hammer throw, his third consecutive top-10 finish of the outdoor slate, behind a toss of 175-7.
The Wolverines will wrap up competition at the Duke Invitational tomorrow (Saturday, April 8) at the Wade Wallace Stadium in Durham, N.C. Competition is slated to begin at 8:40 a.m. U-M also has three entrants at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, where events will kick off at 9 a.m. CDT.
