DURHAM, N.C. -- Senior/junior Paul Sarantos (Portage, Mich./Northern HS) captured his second shot put crown of the outdoor slate to pace the University of Michigan men's track and field team Saturday (April 8) on the second and final day of competition at the Duke Invitational at the Wade Wallace Stadium. Sarantos and freshman Sean Pruitt (Cato, Wis./Valders HS) each boasted top-10 performances in both the shot put and discus events.
It was the second career win for Sarantos, coming just three weeks after his first event trophy at the season-opening Shamrock Invitational (March 17-18). The Wolverine registered a mark of 54-0 1/2 -- the second-longest distance of his career -- to top the 33-man field by more than eight inches. Sarantos also placed seventh in the discus throw behind a personal-best 156-6.
Pruitt completed the weekend throws trifecta, adding to a solid 14th-place performance in the previous day's hammer throw competition. The U-M freshman claimed fourth place in the shot put with a throw of 52-6 before laying down his first collegiate mark in discus, throwing a distance of 157-3 to take sixth place among the 38-man field in the event.
Junior captain John D'Arcy (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont HS) registered a fourth-place performance among the 140-man field in the developmental section of the 800-meter run, clocking a season-best time of 1:54.95 -- just 0.77 seconds out of the winning position. Fifth-year senior Rondell Ruff (Detroit, Mich./Henry Ford HS) came less than a second shy of the NCAA regional-qualifying time in the seeded section of the event, running 1:51.17 to place 11th. He missed the standard (1:50.40) by 0.77 seconds.
The Wolverines will head west next Saturday (April 15) for their second consecutive appearance at the annual Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Hosted by Arizona State University, the competition is slated for a 1 p.m. PDT start at Sun Angel Stadium.
