Michigan Remains Second After Day Two of Big Tens

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team competed in the second day (Saturday, May 13) of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships and remains in second place with a point total of 47.67, trailing Minnesota (75.50) at the Ralph H. Young Track and Field Complex. In the day's five event finals, the Wolverines added points in the heptathlon (10), 3,000m steeplechase (5) and long jump (1).
Leading the Wolverines point-getters was freshman Bettie Wade (Northville, Mich./Farmington) with eight points for her second-place finish in the heptathlon with a personal-best NCAA provisional standard of 5,354 points. Senior Beth Vinckier (Yale, Mich./Yale) earned two points for the Maize and Blue with a seventh-place finish with a personal-best total of 4,596 points.
In the 3,000m steeplechase senior/junior Arianne Field (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) finished in fourth place with a personal-best NCAA regional qualifying time of 10:22.22, giving Michigan five points.
Freshman Tiffany Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti) added one point to the point total after finishing eighth place with a long jump of 19-1 1/4. Ofili also qualified for the 100m hurdles finals by winning her heat with an NCAA regional qualifying time of 13.76, but she missed advancing in the 100m dash despite tying her personal-best time of 12.11.
Freshman Geena Gall (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) qualified for the 800m finals after winning the first heat with an NCAA regional qualifying time of 2:07.42, the best time of prelims. Sophomore Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) also qualified for the finals with an regional qualifying time of 2:07.83, the best among those who advanced to the finals on time.
In the 400m hurdles, freshmen Katie LaValley (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and Amber Hay (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) automatically qualified for the finals after taking second place in their respective heats. LaValley had the fourth best prelims time with a regional qualifying time of 1:00.70, while Hay posted a time of 1:00.84.
Junior Chanelle Campbell (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) and sophomore Serita Williams (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee) will represent the Maize and Blue in the 400m dash, after running the sixth and eighth fastest times, respectively, in the prelims. Campbell posted a personal-best time of 55.69, while Williams crossed the finishing line with a personal-best time of 56.03.
Michigan also qualified for the 4x100m relay finals, running 46.53 in the prelims.
The Wolverines will conclude the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in East Lansing, Mich., with the third and final day of competition on Sunday (May 14). Action is slated to begin at 11:40 a.m. with the triple jump.
