PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Junior Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and sophomore Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped a 6-3, 7-6(0) decision to Callum Beale and Miguel Reyes Varela of Texas in the round of 16 at the 2006 NCAA Doubles Championship Friday (May 26) at Stanford University's Taube Family Tennis Center. In a tightly contested match, Beale and Reyes Varela earned a late break to help clinch the first set and then followed with a dominating performance in the second-set tiebreaker to advance to the quarterfinals.
The two teams were on serve for a majority of the first set until Beale and Reyes Varela broke Hung and Maravic's serve to go up 5-3. The Longhorn tandem went on to hold serve and wrap up a 6-3 victory in the first set.
Hung and Maravic, who are ranked 12th in the nation, found themselves in trouble midway through the second set after being broken at 3-2. The Wolverine duo, however, returned the favor three games later by breaking Beale and Reyes Varela to knot the score at 4-4. Hung and Maravic were unable to gain another break the rest of the way, as the two pairings prepared for a tiebreaker.
Beale and Reyes Varela, who are ranked 29th nationally, proved to be too much for Hung and Maravic to handle in the extra session, as the Longhorn tandem reeled off seven straight points to clinch the win.
The Wolverine pair advanced to Friday's match after handing Boise State's Thomas Schoeck and Luke Shields a 6-3, 6-4 loss in opening-round action on Thursday (May 25). It was U-M's first victory at the NCAA Doubles Championship since 1986.
Hung and Maravic, Michigan's first NCAA doubles qualifiers since 1996, conclude the season with a team-best 26-10 overall record, including a 19-6 mark in dual match play. The pair is 38-16 overall in two seasons playing together.
The Wolverines, who finished the year at 13-12, will return all eight letterwinners and welcome three incoming recruits for the 2006-07 season.
