ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis program announced today (Thursday, June 15) that Jenny Kuehn (Leipzig, Germany/Sportgymnasium Leipzig), a Tulane University graduate with one year of eligibility remaining, will join the Wolverines for the 2006-07 season.
Kuehn, who graduated with a marketing degree last month, will enroll in U-M's Stephen M. Ross School of Business' Masters of Accounting program this fall. She has a year of athletic eligibility left after Tulane's spring tennis season was suspended due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina.
Kuehn made an immediate impact in her first collegiate season, teaming with fellow freshman Julie Smekodub to claim the doubles title at the 2002 ITA National Indoor Championships. It marked Tulane's first and only national championship in women's tennis and the school's first individual title in any sport since 1955. The Green Wave tandem, which also earned the doubles crown at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships a month earlier, finished the 2003 dual match season with a 13-5 record at Nos. 1 and 2. Kuehn completed her first dual match campaign with an 18-3 mark at the top two singles positions. She was named the Conference USA Player and Freshman of the Year before receiving singles and doubles bids to the NCAA Championships. Kuehn and Smekodub were named NCAA All-Americans after ending the year ranked No. 10 in doubles.
Kuehn followed her spectacular freshman season by posting a 19-5 dual match singles record at Nos. 1-3 en route to her second straight C-USA Player of the Year award. She teamed with Maria Ivanov for a remarkable 20-2 dual match doubles record at Nos. 2 and 3. As a junior in 2004-05, Kuehn compiled a 13-10 dual match singles record and a 22-2 doubles mark with Smekodub.
The 2005 C-USA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's tennis, Kuehn was on pace for another strong season after claiming the singles and doubles crowns at the Wells Fargo Hurricane Katrina Tournament this past fall.
