ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's rowing head coach Mark Rothstein announced Thursday (July 27) that associate head coach Emily Ford is leaving the program after 10 seasons to become the head coach at Oregon State University.
"I am really happy for Emily as this is a great and well deserved opportunity for her," said Rothstein. "I am also saddened because we will be losing a terrific coach from our staff and a wonderful person from our daily lives."
Ford's chief responsibility at Michigan was coaching the second varsity eight. In 2004 she received the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association's Central Region and National Assistant Coach of the Year awards. That spring the U-M second varsity eight won its Big Ten Championship event, earned a runner-up finish at the Central Region Championship and placed fourth at the NCAA Championship. In 2001, the Ford-led second varsity eight captured an NCAA title.
"This has been 11 of the best years of my life," said Ford. "I would not be the coach I am today without the experiences that Michigan has afforded me. It's never easy to leave a place or people that you love, but I am thrilled about my new adventure. Everything about Oregon State impressed me -- from the athletes that I met to the coaches to the administrators. I am eager to get started on the next chapter of my life."
Ford joined the U-M coaching staff in 1996 in preparation for the rowing program's elevation to varsity status for the 1996-97 academic year. She began as the novice team coach before moving up to the varsity crews.
