Michigan Plays Western Michigan to Scoreless Draw

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team outshot Western Michigan 33-6 but could not capitalize on scoring chance after scoring chance and played the Broncos to a 0-0 draw Friday (Aug. 25) at the U-M Soccer Field. Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic), who played the first half, and Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), who played the second half and both overtime frames, combined for the shutout.
A Michigan corner led to the first scoring chance of the afternoon seven minutes in as Katelin Spencer (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) headed a Danelle Underwood (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) corner off of the post.
Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) earned the best opportunity the rest of the half off a pass from Sarah Banco (Medfield, Mass./Noble and Greenough). Banco touched the ball to Coffman in the 18-yard box, but Coffman could not get enough mustard on the shot and Western Michigan made the save. The game went into halftime 0-0 despite U-M creating a 14-2 shot advantage.
The Wolverines once again dominated the shot chart (11-4) in the second stanza. Coffman had the closest chance in the 75th minute, juking a defender at the top of the box and firing a shot off a WMU defender and wide. U-M earned a corner kick on the play for its final chance of regulation.
Overtime saw no scores and the contest ended 0-0. Michigan's best scoring play in the first overtime came on Jamie Artsis' (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) header from 13 yards out that trickled inches by the left post, narrowly missing the goal. In the second, U-M looked to end it on an Underwood set piece, but a wild scramble in the six-yard box ended with a WMU clear.
The Wolverines welcome No. 17 Arizona to Ann Arbor on Sunday (Aug. 27) as they take on the Wildcats at noon at the U-M Soccer Field.
