ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- USA Swimming recently released its preliminary rosters for the 2007 World Championships, Pan-American Games and World University Games teams, and three University of Michigan men's swimmers and two coaches will be represented on Team USA at the international events. The selection of the international rosters was based on the performance of individual swimmers at the 2006 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships held last month.
Junior co-captain Alex Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) will swim for Team USA in the World University Games in both the 200-meter butterfly and the 400-meter individual medley. The event will take place Aug. 8-18, 2007, in Bangkok, Thailand.
In the Pan-American Games, both sophomore Matt Patton (Matthews, N.C./Butler) and freshman Scott Spann (Austin, Texas/Westlake) will be swimming for Team USA. Patton will participate in the 400-meter freestyle, while Spann will swim in the 200-meter breaststroke. The Pan-American Games will take place July 13-29, 2007, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The USA Swimming staff for the 2007 World Championships will include Wolverines head coach Bob Bowman as the head men's coach. In his third year coaching the Wolverines, Bowman has served as a U.S. assistant coach at the 2004 Olympics and each of the last three World Championships (2001, '03, '05). He will be joined by John Collins of Badger Swim Club on the women's side for the championships that will take place March 25-April 1, 2007, in Melbourne, Australia.
U-M men's swimming volunteer assistant coach Michael Phelps was named to the United States World Championships team. Phelps' events will include the 100- and 200-meter butterfly, 200- and 400-meter individual medley, the 200-meter freestyle, and the 4x200-meter freestyle relay.
Former U-M national champions Peter Vanderkaay (2003-06) and Davis Tarwater (2003-06) will join Phelps on the American team for the World Championships. Vanderkaay will swim the 400-meter freestyle, while Tarwater will swim the 200-meter butterfly. Vanderkaay also was selected as an alternate for the 4x200-meter freestyle relay.
