SEATTLE, Wash. -- The third-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team earned its ninth victory in its last 11 scored events Saturday (Sept. 16), taking first place at the Sundodger Invitational hosted by the University of Washington at Lincoln Park.
Senior/junior Erin Webster (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) ran to her second straight victory, taking first place in the 6,000-meter race with a time of 20:17. Webster led the Wolverines to victory as she finished 14 seconds ahead of runner-up Haley Paul of Washington State, who was 14th in the NCAA last season.
Halfway through the race, Webster was in close with the rest of the leaders, but she was able to pull away over the last four minutes to build a comfortable lead. Her dominant performance came just one week after she earned Big Ten Runner of the Week for her first career victory at the Indiana Open.
Michigan finished the race with four harriers in the top 10. Junior/sophomore Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) was the second Wolverine to finish, crossing the line in fourth place with a time of 20:54. Junior Alyson Kohlmeier (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Patrick's) had a strong showing in her first race of the 2006 season, taking fifth place in 20:58, and fifth-year senior Arianne Field (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett) took eighth place (21:13).
Freshman Jenny Morgan (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) had another strong performance, taking 14th with a time of 21:23. Morgan has finished in the top 15 in all three of her collegiate races (third at Wolverine Open, 10th at Indiana Open).
The Wolverines will have a two-week break before returning to action on Friday, Sept. 29, at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. The 6,000-meter women's race is scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. at the Notre Dame Golf Course.
