BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie against Indiana on Sunday (Sept. 24) at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Sophomore/freshman Patrick Sperry (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central HS) made three saves in the two 10-minute overtime periods to keep the match deadlocked.
In the fifth minute the Maize and Blue netted the first marker of the match, jumping to an early 1-0 lead over the Hoosiers. Sophomore Michael Holody (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) gave the Wolverines the 1-0 advantage as he scored his third goal of the season off his second successful penalty kick of the year. Holody's goal was set up by freshman Peri Marosevic's (Rockford, Ill./Edison Academy) offensive pressure, as Marosevic drew a foul in the goal box after taking a shot.
The Wolverines continued intruding the IU defensive third of the field as they took a 2-0 lead in the 19th minute. Senior tri-captain Kevin Hall (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Central HS) gave Michigan its two-goal advantage with his first goal of the season. Marosevic earned his second assist of the season after sending Hall a through ball from the right side, allowing Hall to beat the keeper low and to the right.
In the 21st minute sophomore Jake Stacy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) had the opportunity to give Michigan a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Steve Bonnell (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Detroit Country Day School) set up the scoring chance after serving the ball in behind the Hoosiers defense with Stacy getting behind the defense as well. An IU defender made a play on the ball along with Indiana keeper Chay Cain, with Stacy and Cain falling to the ground after all three players hit the ball. As Stacy was lying on his right hip, he spun 90 degrees to strike the ball with his left foot, but the ball hit the post and went wide.
The Hoosiers put themselves within one goal of the Wolverines in the 34th minute as Kevin Robson scored his first of two markers on a penalty kick, beating Sperry, who was facing his second PK of the year. Robson netted the equalizer in the 68th minute from 25 yards out.
In the extra periods of the match Sperry made three saves, with two of them coming in the second overtime. Sperry finished the game with five saves in 110 minutes.
Michigan searched for the game-winner in the closing seconds of the second overtime as Holody cracked a volley from 30 yards out that sailed a foot and a half wide at the 109:58 mark.
The Wolverines come back to Ann Arbor to face the Detroit Titans on Wednesday (Sept. 27) at 7 p.m. on the U-M Soccer Field.
