Delicata Falls in ITA All-American Prequalifying Opener
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Kara Delicata (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich Secondary School), a senior on the University of Michigan women's tennis team, lost in the first round of singles prequalifying at the 2006 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships Saturday afternoon (Sept. 30) at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Delicata, who was not at 100 percent physically due to food poisoning experienced last night, gave a courageous fight but was unable to knock off No. 95-ranked Rawia Elsisi of Troy. Delicata fell by a score of 7-6(4), 6-1 to the fifth seed in the 64-player draw.
It marks the second time in as many years that Delicata has fallen in the first round of prequalifying at the national tournament.
Delicata will remain in California and join senior Jenny Kuehn (Leipzig, Germany/Sportgymnasium Leipzig) in the 32-team qualifying doubles draw. The Wolverine duo will begin first-round play on Tuesday (Oct. 3) at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Kuehn will also represent Michigan in the 64-player qualifying singles bracket, which also begins Tuesday.
