SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team suffered a 1-0 double-overtime loss to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Saturday (Sept. 30) at Harder Stadium. For the first time in program history, the Wolverines have played three straight double-overtime matches, playing a total of 223:29 minutes in three games.
Just 3:29 into the second overtime, UCSB's Jon Curry netted the golden goal as he beat sophomore/freshman Patrick Sperry (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central HS). The Gauchos' Eric Avila earned the game-winning assist as he set up the play with a free kick. Avila's free kick gave Curry the opportunity to beat Sperry low and to the left.
Sperry finished the night with six saves in 103:29, including four saves in the first period. Sperry also made one save in the second stanza and one in the final overtime, as he was untested in the first extra period.
The Wolverines were unable to put the ball in the net off their scoring opportunities as they only took two shots on goal off 11 total shots. Freshman Peri Marosevic (Rockford, Ill./Edison Academy HS) led the team in shooting with three shots and one shot on goal, while senior Michael O'Reilly (Spring, Texas/Klein HS) took the other shot on goal. Sophomore Jake Stacy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) and freshman Mauro Fuzetti (Houston, Texas/Stratford HS) had two shots apiece.
In the second half at the 54:35 mark Marosevic was on the end of a questionable call, causing Michigan's bench to earn a yellow card. Marosevic was pulled down by two UCSB defenders as he was dribbling down field on a clear breakaway, the referees waved the play on, and no penalty shot was given.
The Wolverines responded by continuing the offensive attack and forcing three game-winning goal opportunities. The Gauchos switched their formation from a 3-5-2 to a 3-4-3 to try and answer defensively, but still allowed the Maize and Blue to slip behind the defense. In the 81st minute sophomore Michael Holody (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) began to press offensively, as he took a header that looked like the game-winner, but it missed inches wide of the net.
Sophomore Santos Perez (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) found Marosevic on a breakaway in the 86th minute. Marosevic was on a one-v-one with the Gauchos' keeper as he tried to chip Kyle Reynish from 15 yards out, but the ball sailed wide right.
In the first overtime sophomore Steve Bonnell (St. Clair Shore, Mich./Detroit Country Day HS) tried to find the golden goal. Bonnell fired a shot from the left flank that hit the crossbar and went out of bounds.
The Wolverines come back to Ann Arbor to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Wednesday (Oct. 4) at 7 p.m. on the U-M Soccer Field. The game will be broadcast live on Comcast Local.
