COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's rowing team swept all of the races against the Ohio State Buckeyes Saturday (Sept. 30) in a series of controlled pieces on the Scioto River. U-M's second varsity eight captured all five of its races.
U-M and Ohio State each had three eights. Michigan's top two eights were matched against OSU's top two boats. The third eights raced head to head in separate pieces from the other crews. There were five pieces for each set of boats, with each piece lasting four minutes, and the stroke limit was set at 26 strokes per minute.
U-M's second varsity eight was first in each of its pieces, finishing between two seats and three quarters of a length ahead of OSU's top boat. The first varsity eight was third in each piece. Michigan's third eight won all five of its sprints.
"It was good exercise," said head coach Mark Rothstein. "As coaches, we saw some technical flaws in the competition. It gives us a good sense of what we need to improve upon. I was pleased with our effort. The results were good, but they're not too meaningful at this point of the year. We have a lot of work to do and improvements to make."
Michigan's next event is the Head of the Charles on Oct. 22 in Boston, Mass.
