TULSA, Okla. -- Freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team competed in the singles qualifying round at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships Monday morning (Oct. 1)at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Playing in his first-ever collegiate match, Jung dropped a 6-2, 7-6(5) decision to Virginia's Ted Angelinos in the opening round of the 128-player draw.
Angelinos struck early, breaking Jung's serve in the first game of the match. Angelinos carried the momentum for the remainder of the set, winning 6-2. Jung then used an early break of his own to gain a 3-0 lead in the second set. Angelinos clawed his way back into the set and forced a tiebreaker, which he won by a 7-5 margin.
Jung, who will play one consolation match Tuesday (Oct. 2), will team with senior Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) in the 32-team main doubles draw, which begins Thursday (Oct. 4). Maravic will also begin play in the 64-player main singles draw earlier that day.

U-M Assistant Coach Sean Maymi
On today's match... "Jason (Jung) took a little while to get settled in. He was actually dictating and controlling a lot of the points in the first set. The points were basically won or lost off his racket. We weren't extremely worried that we lost in the first set because a lot of the points were going in (Ted) Angelinos' favor. Jason started the second set on a strong note, getting an early break to go up 3-0. It looked like he was settling in, but then he kind of played a loose game. He let the guy back into it and had a dogfight on his hands from there on out."
On the challenge of playing your first collegiate match on a national level... "Jason (Jung) has played at a high level before, but it's a new environment for him having coaches on the court. Everything was new to him and he might have had some nerves there at the beginning. He settled in and got a lot of the shots that he wanted, he was just unable to execute in the end. Jason had a lot of winners but also a lot of unforced errors. That's not how we want him to be playing."
On what Jason Jung can take away from the match... "I think after playing this match he'll settle down and realize that his game is good enough to beat a lot of these guys out here. He'll understand that he doesn't have to play too far out of his comfort zone to win matches. Obviously it's tough when you get a loss, but I definitely feel like he's one of the better freshmen in the country."
