MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Three members of the University of Michigan men's tennis team competed in the 64-player singles qualifying draw of the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships Thursday and Friday (Oct. 18-19) at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center.
Junior Scott Bruckmann(Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) advanced the furthest in the draw, as he picked up victories over Wisconsin-Green Bay's Tim Prudlow (6-2, 6-4) and Illinois-Chicago's Bastian Harbo (5-7, 6-4, 6-1) to earn a trip to the qualifying final round. Despite a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 setback to Northern Illinois' Alex Friesen, Bruckmann will still move on to the main draw (lucky loser).
Sophomore Matt Parks(Troy, Mich./Troy HS) and freshman Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) both earned opening-round wins before being eliminated. Park defeated DePaul's Bartosz Jozwiak, 7-6(2), 6-3, while Madden handed Iowa's Patrick Dwyer a 6-4, 6-4 defeat.
Michigan will field three teams in the 64-team doubles main draw, which begins Friday (Oct. 19) evening. Bruckmann will pair with junior Peter Aarts(Pound Ridge, N.Y./Pound Ridge HS), Madden with sophomore George Navas(Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) and sophomore Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) will play with freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS).
