STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team suffered its second loss of the weekend, falling 2-0 at No. 10 Penn State on Sunday (Oct. 14) on Jeffrey Field. The Wolverines finished the game with a 15-14 advantage on the shot chart and put six balls on net, but Katie Schoepfer's early goal proved too much, forcing Michigan to play from behind for most of the game.
Senior Katie Bohard (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central), freshman Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) and junior Katie Miler (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) each had three shots in the effort but could not solve the Penn State goalkeeper.
Penn State came out strong and put a quick one in the net in the 10th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Schoepfer used some misdirection on junior goalkeeper Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), pulling her to the left side of the box before shooting for the opposite corner after receiving the pass from Zoe Bouchelle.
Michigan got its best chance of the opening stanza in the 21st minute off the foot of Bohard. The Wolverine forward ripped a shot off the post, coming within inches of tying the game. Six minutes later, Bouchelle preyed on Michigan again, this time with a goal of her own. Danielle Toney picked off a U-M clearing attempt off a corner kick and fed it to Bouchelle, who found the back of the net to give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 edge.
After the break, Michigan dialed up the pressure on the home team. The Wolverines blasted 12 shots, four on net, in the second frame but were unable to capitalize.
Michigan will host Northwestern on Friday (Oct. 19) at 5:30 p.m. on the U-M Soccer Field. The Big Ten Network will showcase the match-up live.
