ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team got off to a strong start in main draw action at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships Friday (Oct. 19), as two Wolverine tandems went undefeated to reach the third round in the 64-team doubles main draw.
Head coach Ronni Bernstein's decision to mix experience with youth paid off on the opening day.
Junior Chisako Sugiyama(Parsippany, N.J./The Montclair Kimberley Academy) and freshman Whitney Taney(Edina, Mich./Edina HS) kept their perfect record intact at 5-0 with victories over Michigan State's Christine Bader and Stephanie Kebler (8-6) and DePaul's Dunja Antunovic and Kirsten Gambrell (8-5).
Junior Lindsey Howard(Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin HS) and freshman Rika Tatsuno(Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) remained undefeated as well (3-0) thanks to wins over Ball State's Haly Calderwood and Sophie Quist (8-1) and Toledo's Maha Guirguis and Martina Wodzinski (9-7).
Sophomore Tania Mahtani(Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) and freshman Denise Muresan(Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson HS) picked up an 8-2 first-round triumph over Northern Illinois' Lilian Asuaje and Brooke Forsberg before being eliminated.
The third round of doubles play will begin Saturday (Oct. 20) at 9 a.m. The 64-player singles main draw, which will feature Howard, Mahtani, Sugiyama, Taney, Tatsuno and freshman Kari Wig(Cochrane, Alberta/Cochrane HS) kicks off after the completion of the morning doubles matches.
