MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Sophomore Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) and freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team picked up a pair of wins Friday (Oct. 19) to advance to the third round of the 64-team doubles main draw at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships, held at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center.
In their first career match as a doubles tandem, Sroczynski and Jung handed Iowa's Christian Bierich and Tommy McGeorge an 8-6 loss. The Wolverine duo carried the momentum over to the second round, where it defeated Notre Dame's Tyler Davis and Stephen Havens by an 8-3 margin. Sroczynski and Jung will take on Northern Illinois' Adam Ford and Brian Livingston in the round of 16 on Saturday (Oct. 20) at 3 p.m. CDT.
Two other U-M doubles teams earned first-round victories in the tournament. Juniors Peter Aarts(Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and Scott Bruckmann(Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) knocked off Chicago State's Prabowo and Prakaso Imanuel (8-2), and sophomore George Navas(Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) and freshman Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) outlasted Chicago State's Abram Mamahit and Jonathan Sutjaidi (8-6).
The 64-player singles main draw, which will feature Aarts, Bruckmann, Jung, Navas and Sroczynski, will begin Saturday following the third round of doubles play.
