MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Sophomore Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) and freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team are still alive after the second day of main draw action (Saturday, Oct. 20) at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships, held at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center. Sroczynski and Jung both went undefeated in singles play to advance to the round of 16, and the two Wolverines teamed together for one more victory to move on to the doubles quarterfinals.
Making his season debut in singles, the 92-ranked Sroczynski posted a 6-4, 6-4 opening-round win over Ohio State's Balazs Novak. A 7-6(6), 5-7, 6-2 triumph over DePaul's Jose Moncada put Sroczynski in Sunday's (Oct. 21) third round against Illinois' No. 9-ranked Ryan Rowe at 8 a.m. CDT.
Jung, ranked No. 124 in the nation, secured his first career singles victory with a 6-3, 7-6(6) decision over DePaul's Austin Doerner in the first round. Jung's 6-3, 6-4 win over Northern Illinois' Alex Friesen allowed him to move on to Sunday's third round against Ohio State's No. 6-ranked Bryan Koniecko at 8 a.m. CDT.
Sroczynski and Jung continued their chemistry on the doubles court, claiming an 8-5 victory over Northern Illinois' Adam Ford and Brian Livingston in the third round. The U-M tandem, which is now 3-0 on the season, will meet Ohio State's No. 25-ranked pairing of Koniecko and Steven Moneke in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. CDT.
Juniors Peter Aarts(Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and Scott Bruckmann(Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) both recorded first-round singles wins. Aarts knocked off Michigan State's Adam Monich, 7-6(6), 6-3, and Bruckmann defeated Purdue's Patrick Rose, 6-4, 6-2.
