MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Sophomore Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./The Montclair Kimberley Academy) and freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calf./West Torrance HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team earned their fourth straight victory Sunday (Oct. 21) to advance to the semifinals of the 64-team doubles main draw at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships, being held at the University of Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center.
The Wolverine tandem got off to a spectacular start against Ohio State's No. 25-ranked duo of Bryan Koniecko and Steven Moneke, earning two breaks in the first six games to jump out to a 5-1 advantage. The Buckeye pair earned a break of their own in the seventh game, but Sroczynski and Jung held serve for the remainder of the match and then broke in the final game to secure an 8-4 victory.
Sroczynski and Jung will meet Wisconsin's Luke Rassow-Kantor and Jeremy Sonkin in the semifinals Monday (Oct. 22) at 10 a.m. CDT.
Sroczynski and Jung also competed in singles action Sunday, but neither was able to move past the round of 16. Sroczynski gave a strong effort against Illinois' No. 9-ranked Ryan Rowe but dropped a 7-6(4), 6-4 decision. Jung fell just few points shy of pushing his match against No. 6-ranked Koniecko to three sets, 6-1, 7-6(3).
