Kalmbach's Goal Helps U-M to Tie Oakland

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. -- Despite dictating the pace for much of the game, the University of Michigan women's soccer team had to settle for a 1-1 tie with Oakland Sunday afternoon (Oct. 28) on the OU Soccer Field. The Wolverines doubled up the Grizzlies in shots, 20-10, and U-M held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Michigan got a first-period goal from fifth-year senior Emily Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic), and two saves from senior Lindsay Yakel (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica) in her first career start in net.
Kalmbach found twine in the 38th minute to give Michigan a 1-0 lead. As she looked to find a teammate on a run to the far post, Kalmbach lofted what appeared to be a cross from outside the 18-yard box -- the cross turned into a goal when it snuck inside the crossbar in the upper 90.
Oakland got the equalizer at 68:33 to knot things up at 1-1. Jessica Boyle let a well struck ball go from 30-yards out that got caught in the wind and slipped past the outstretched arms of Yakel.
The overtime frames could not produce a winner -- despite both teams doing their part to end the stalemate. Oakland rung a shot off of the post on a corner kick in the second overtime frame, but the U-M defenders were able to clear before damage was done. Michigan held an advantage in shots in the two overtimes, but the Wolverines could not muster a late goal.
The Wolverines wrap up their 2007 season with an intrastate showdown with Michigan State Friday (Nov. 2) on U-M Soccer Field at 7 p.m.
