NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end Friday afternoon (Nov. 23) with a 67-43 loss to Iowa State in the opening round of the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournamentat Memorial Gymnasium. The Wolverines (3-1) fell victim to the three-point shot the entire game, as the Cyclones (3-0) canned 12 triples (12-of-32) compared to U-M's three (3-of-12).
Sophomore Krista Phillips(Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Aden Bowman Collegiate HS) matched a career high with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting to lead the Maize and Blue. Junior Stephany Skrba(Toronto, Ontario/Langstaff Secondary School) chipped in nine points and four rebounds, and senior Janelle Cooper(Detroit, Mich./Renaissance HS) contributed seven points and four boards.
U-M finished the game shooting just 36 percent (16-of-45). Michigan's starting unit accounted for just 11 of the team's points while Iowa State's starting five poured in 52. Allison Lacey proved to be the difference in the game, as she drained nine three-pointers en route to a career-high 35 points.
The Cyclones exploded out of the gates, as Lacey hit six triples during a 22-1 Iowa State run to open the game. Lacey scored all but three of the team's points during the streak, while the Cyclone defense held the Wolverines without a bucket for nearly seven minutes. U-M committed five turnovers and missed its first six field goal attempts before a lay-up from Phillips cut the deficit to 22-3 with 13:33 left in the first half.
Phillips' basket jumpstarted a 14-3 Michigan run that trimmed the ISU lead to 25-15 at 10:37. The Wolverine surge featured a three-point play by Phillips, a pair of hoops from Skrba and Cooper's lone triple of the contest. Junior Melinda Queen(Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg HS) capped off the run with her second basket of the young season, bringing Michigan within 10 points of the lead.
Michigan found the bottom of the net just two more times in the remaining minutes of the first half, with Phillips converting again down low before senior Krista Clement(St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle HS) knocked down a three-pointer at 4:58. The Cyclones ended the half by scoring six unanswered points to take a 37-20 advantage into the locker room.
Lacey finished the first half scoring 24 of Iowa State's 37 points on 9-12 shooting, including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Phillips recorded seven of Michigan's first nine points in the second half to keep the Iowa State lead at 13 points, 42-29, with 16:59 to play. The sharp-shooting Cyclones did not allow the Wolverines any closer for the remainder of the night, as ISU scored 15 of its final 25 points from long range. Lacey drilled three more triples in the second half to come within one trey of matching the school record of 10, which was set by Lacey's teammate Heather Ezell just five days ago.
The Wolverines will face Belmont in the third-place game of the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament Sunday (Nov. 25)at Memorial Gymnasium at noon CST. The Bruins opened the tournament with a 104-43 setback to host Vanderbilt earlier Friday.
