Wolverines Use Big Runs to Rally Past Louisville, Advance to Program’s Second Elite Eight

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The No. 2 seed University of Michigan women's basketball team used a pair of runs in the second and third quarters to rally from an 11-point first-half deficit in a 71-52 win over No. 3 seed Louisville on Saturday afternoon (March 28) at Dickies Arena. The win sends Michigan to its second Elite Eight in program history and ties the program record for wins in a season with 28.
Michigan (28-6) had three players score in double figures, led by 19 points and five rebounds from Olivia Olson. Syla Swords turned in 16 points and four rebounds, with Te'Yala Delfosse going for 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Brooke Quarles Daniels had seven points and nine rebounds, with Mila Holloway chipping in five points, four rebounds and seven assists. Michigan held a 42-33 advantage on the glass and forced 18 turnovers.
Down 25-14 with 6:53 left in the second quarter, Michigan uncorked an 18-2 run over the rest of the second quarter to take a 32-27 halftime lead. The run started with six straight points from the Wolverines, forcing a Louisville timeout with the score at 25-20 with 4:30 left before halftime.
Delfosse hit a triple out of the timeout, with Swords converting on a layup with 2:53 left to pull Michigan level at 25. Delfosse followed with a three-point play to give Michigan its first lead of the day, 28-25, with just under two minutes remaining. U-M scored four of the final six points of the quarter for a five-point halftime lead.
Louisville started the third quarter on a 7-0 run, taking a 34-32 lead with 7:33 left on the third-quarter clock. Michigan answered with a triple from Swords to stem the tide. The Cardinals' last lead came at 38-37 with 4:53 left in the third off a jumper in the lane. Quarles Daniels split a pair out of the media timeout, igniting an 18-0 run that put the game out of reach.
After the free throw, Holloway converted a layup and Olson made good on a three-point play for five straight points. Quarles Daniels and Kendall Dudley made back-to-back layups, with Swords and Olson hitting back-to-back three-pointers. Dudley and Olson had baskets sandwiched around a Louisville layup for a 57-40 lead after 30 minutes.
Michigan led by as many as 23 points in the final quarter en route to the 71-52 win.
U-M will face either No. 3-ranked Texas or No. 16 Kentucky on Monday evening (March 30) at 6 p.m. CT.
