STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Despite having the early advantage on a first-half goal from sophomore forward Peri Marosevic(Rockford, Ill./Edison Academy), the University of Michigan men's soccer team failed to answer Penn State's two second-half goals, as U-M lost 2-1 Sunday (Nov. 4) on Jeffrey Field.
The game looked as if it would go into overtime with a 1-1 tie in the 81st minute, but PSU shot a goal past the Michigan defense to give itself a 2-1 advantage. Michigan was unable to score in the remaining nine minutes despite a good chance on a corner kick by sophomore forward Mauro Fuzetti(Houston, Texas/Stratford). The Maize and Blue could not convert the opportunity and fell 1-2 to the Nittany Lions.
Michigan and Penn State played evenly for much of the first half. In the 35th minute, Marosevic broke through with his sixth goal of the season. Junior forward Steve Bonnell(St. Clair Shores, Mich./Detroit Country Day) had possession of the ball. After two touches, he mailed the ball to junior midfielder Jake Stacy(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central), who sent the ball to an in-motion Marosevic. When the PSU keeper came out to defend the ball, Marosevic shot it to the left side past the goalie and into the empty net. The Wolverines held the Nittany Lions scoreless for the remainder of the first stanza.
Despite the strong performance by junior/sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Sperry(Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), who helped to keep Penn State off the board throughout the majority of the game, PSU bent a ball through the U-M goal at 67:18 to tie it up, 1-1.
In the 82nd minute, junior defender Michael Holody(Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) had a great look to tie the contest. With possession of the ball, Holody juked two defenders to gain a one-on-one against the Penn State goalie. Trying to get off a low shot, Holody was stymied when the PSU keeper made a fantastic save to hold the Nittany Lion lead.
Michigan will begin play in the Big Ten Tournament Thursday (Nov. 8) in East Lansing, Mich. The Wolverines will face Ohio State at 11:30 am.
