ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Mike DePietro(Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) and freshman David Streeter(Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team both earned convincing qualifying victories Friday (Nov. 9) to advance to the main draw of the Big Ten Conference Singles Championship, being held at the Varsity Tennis Center.
DePietro, the No. 2 seed in the 16-player qualifying field, defeated Iowa's Austen Kauss by a dominating score of 6-1, 6-2. The sixth-seeded Streeter easily knocked off Purdue's Jose Fuenmayor by a 6-3, 6-3 margin.
DePietro and Streeter will now join senior Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija), juniors Peter Aarts(Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and Scott Bruckmann(Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephen's Episcopal School), sophomores George Navas(Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School), Matt Parks(Troy, Mich./Troy HS) and Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School), and freshmen Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) and Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) in the 64-player main draw, with the first round of competition set to begin Saturday (Nov. 10) at 8 a.m.
