
U-M's Chan Wins Bronze at Southeast Asia Games

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, Thailand -- Sophomore David Chan(Singapore/Hale School) of the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team took third place to earn a bronze medal in the pommel horse at the Southeast Asia Games Monday (Dec. 10).
Chan, competing in the individual all-around preliminaries Friday (Dec. 7), qualified for the finals in vault (15.400), floor (13.350), pommel horse (14.100) and parallel bars (14.050). In the individual event finals, Chan finished with a score of 14.750 on the pommel horse to earn bronze. He finished in sixth on floor (13.000), seventh on vault (14.750), and seventh on the parallel bars (12.750). Team Singapore came in fourth place (296.100) in the team finals Friday.
Chan, a walk-on his freshman year, was awarded the Solomon Scholarship for 2007-08 after gaining All-America accolades last year for the Wolverines on the vault with a seventh-place national finish. He is also a pommel horse specialist with a career high of 9.00 at Michigan.
Michigan, which is ranked sixth in the GymInfo preseason coaches poll, will begin its season Saturday (Dec. 15) with the Maize and Blue Intrasquad in Cliff Keen Arena. The event is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
