CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's track and field team closed the final day of the Big Ten Indoor Championships, placing second out of 10 teams with a total of 108.50 points at the Armory Track on University of Illinois' campus. For the first time since 2004, the Wolverines placed second; U-M won the conference crown in 2005 and 2006.
Several records fell for the Maize and Blue. Fifth-year senior co-captain Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac HS) led the charge as she claimed her fourth 600m run Big Ten Indoor Championships title -- the most by any conference runner. Erdman's time of 1:28.38 broke a 10-year old Armory Track record by 1.67 seconds. The fifth-year senior also reset her own Michigan indoor track record (set in 2004) by 1.19 seconds. Sophomores Amber Hay (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance HS) and Katie LaValley (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) also earned points for Michigan in the event, placing sixth and eighth, respectively. Hay posted a sixth-place season-best time of 1:32.78, while LaValley crossed the line in 1:33.68.
Junior Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey HS) also broke a facility record, claiming her second-straight Big Ten mile run title with an NCAA automatic qualifying, career-best time of 4:37.92. Edwards' time broke the facility record -- set in 1984 by Wisconsin's Cathy Brantaby -- by 0.39 seconds.
Senior Erin Webster (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child HS) became the second Wolverine in program-history to claim the 3,000m and 5,000m titles at the Big Ten Indoor Championships. Webster took home the 5,000m crown after finishing in first place with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 16:19.07. Webster edged out Iowa's Diane Nukuri by 5.53 seconds.
In the 800m run, sophomore Geena Gall (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) claimed her first indoor Big Ten title with her first-place, NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:06.22. In her first Big Ten Championships meet, freshman Jennie Biewald (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest HS) gave Michigan one point with her eighth place finish, clocking in with a personal-record time of 2:11.67.
Sophomore Tiffany Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti HS) earned her first 60m hurdles indoor crown, posting an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 8.10. Ofili also earned points in the 60m dash with a fourth-place time of 7.50.
Senior Chanelle Campbell (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock HS) gave U-M one point in the 400m with an eighth place career-best time of 55.64, missing the NCAA provisional mark by 0.94 seconds.
In the jumping events, the Maize and Blue got valuable points from sophomore co-captain Bettie Wade (Northville, Mich./Farmington HS) and sophomore Casey Taylor (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic HS). Wade earned 1.5 points in the high jump, tying for seventh place with a clearance of 5-7; Taylor took fourth in the triple jump, grabbing five points with a jump of 41-2 1/4.
The Wolverines closed out the day with a fourth place finish in the 4x400m relay, clocking in at 3:43.25.
