First Varsity Eight Beats Indiana, Loses to Ohio State

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan rowing team swept its races against Indiana but dropped the top three varsity events against No. 3 Ohio State Saturday (April 14) on Lake Ovid. U-M had a strong morning showing with five wins in five races against the Hoosiers. However, in the afternoon Michigan won only the second varsity four and novice races against the Buckeyes.
In the morning, U-M's first varsity eight earned a win in a time of 6:57.86, which was exactly eight seconds ahead of Indiana (7:05.86).
Michigan's second varsity eight collected a win in 7:08.43. Indiana's boat finished in 7:19.50.
The Maize and Blue first varsity four clinched an easy victory over IU with an 8:05.11 to 8:18.20 time difference.
Michigan had two entries in the second varsity four race. U-M's 'A' boat won in 8:01.04. Indiana was second (8:19.30), followed by U-M's 'B' boat (8:23.50).
Michigan's two boats in the novice eight race finished first (7:16.55) and second (7:24.80) ahead of Indiana's shell.
For the second time in as many weeks the Buckeyes beat U-M in the first varsity eight race. OSU won by just over a boat length (7:17.10) as the Wolverines crossed the finish line in 7:21.20.
Ohio State's second varsity eight also collected a one-length victory by finishing in 7:39.47, 4.30 seconds in front of Michigan.
The first varsity four event went to Ohio State by nearly three lengths in 8:29.38. U-M's time was 8:41.78.
Michigan's second varsity four entries placed first and third. The 'A' boat won in 8:19.31. OSU was second in 8:39.11 and the U-M 'B' boat turned in a time of 8:52.01.
Michigan's 'A' novice boat took first (7:44.33), while the 'B' boat was second (7:48.43). Ohio State's crew was third in 7:53.44.
Michigan is off next weekend in preparation for the Big Ten Championships, which will take place on Saturday, April 28, in Madison, Wis.
